Facilitators:  Clare Hamilton and Jeremy Rees

Each Council has its own engineering code. Varying codes and varying interpretations make it difficult for consultants, contractors, and developers who work across district boundaries to ensure they have met the nuanced requirements of the local council. This can be exacerbated when land development engineers are faced with unique situations and engineering judgement may be required.

It is important that consultants and councils work closely together to achieve good outcomes for our communities, and we should be trying to make that collaboration as easy as possible.

In this workshop we will be discussing:

  • Common ambiguities in interpretation and how we might create consistency.
  • The difficulties in implementing and adhering to engineering codes from both the perspective of council and consultancies.
  • The District Plan, Engineering Codes, past engineering practices or something else- which takes precedence.
  • Strategies to build stronger communication and collaboration between engineers and regulators.
  • The role of standards versus engineering judgement.
